Also known as selling pickaxes to the gold miners! You are in for a ride because in this world there are two types of people: Those who are being sold something or those doing the selling. Unfortunately, many musicians lean towards the former which is why most never make it!
Because it's all about selling the dream! If Hollywood can sell the image of a rapper, then most aspiring rappers are willing to spend for it... Meanwhile, the ones earning a living are actually those who sell the promotional secrets, courses, tools, and a boatload of information of HOW to become a rapper while they leverage systems that generate value.
The Innate Desire of Humans
One industry that's a HOT market is social media, mainly because almost everyone IS on there and therefore many people caught onto the idea that Instagram is easy marketing. The problem with it? There's too much competition! I mean, everybody nowadays thinks they can be an influencer but what about the years of building up an audience that simply doesn't come overnight? Like yeah, just because a business idea can be profitable and you can start with little money doesn't mean that 100,000 people before you have tried and failed and are always going to fail because they don't understand precision and narrowing down your niche.
That is why you should be aware whenever you hear and see advertisers on YouTube and actually, anybody who tells you that you can, "start a business with little money and make hundreds of thousands of dollars a month" Yep, when it sounds TOO good to be true we all know that it's bullshit. The problem is, we are hardwired to like this "bullshit" a little because we humans want life to be easy. It's an innate desire that we don't realize gets in the way sometimes.
Brands Last Longer than Any
So maybe you're making stock music, produce hip hop beats, or you're a creative person in general and you want to make it... Or what if you just don't have a decisive answer yet for what you want to do with your life but you just want the attention. I have a world for you: Analyze the path you're traveling. Is the path you're on crowded or is it narrow?
Some of you might not admit to your path being crowded, but yet you're still looking for how to make it. My answer for you is that this new world of social media and the internet has hoodwinked YOU and so definitely made you hungry for more. You see in this situation, you need to be smart and realize it's not really the average musician that makes money in the game. In fact, the average musician is just over broke. It is those who sell courses on how to make beats, mixing, or production of music.
The YouTubers who've built a brand last wayyyy longer than the YouTubers who are just funny and look good. Obviously, we know that brands sell a lifestyle not the product itself, but this is where marketing to musicians about marketing as a musician becomes fun. Advertisers or marketing "gurus" who have a following but are niche-specific and have a functioning website know with various gold nuggets of their own they WILL and certainly do sell to the gold miners with a mentality of "blowing up quick" or "making it" (Those gold miners are as follows, "Instagram influencers, E-book writers, Podcasters, YouTubers, anyone looking to get rich easy or industry with low barrier to entry and high competition)
