Get out there, never give up, know that music is all a number's game!
Requirements for composing stock music
So what are the requirements to begin making background music or royalty free music for production libraries, huh? Well, as you probably know by now, most composers use what's called a DAW or Digital Audio Workstation! Basically, a program like Logic Pro or FL Studio is just fine to begin creating compositions that many producers will begin to use in their next project of course! But even a less expensive DAW such as Reaper is great for beginners!
Turning Tunes into Income
It takes years to become an overnight success, you might be really good at finding your keywords but not so good at being consistent with your music. Maybe you have to work on getting your music to sound emotional and clean, or maybe you're frustrated because everyone keeps ignoring your songs and you see other whack/generic/poor quality music get hundreds of likes and thousands of plays...
What do the "professionals" know that you don't? What is it about the select few composers who have an uncanny ability to get people to hear their music while yours just passes through the months and years? Turning your tunes into income is a process that involves dedication and hustle! Not everyone can become a stock musician or top the charts on Songtradr, Pond5, themusicase.com, Musicdealers.com, Productiontrax.com, or Audiojungle.net
Leverage the Law of Averages
There's no doubt in my mind that stock music libraries are a numbers game and you have to push yourself out there constantly. Although it's important to keep in mind that you shouldn't let it affect your performance! A great way to learn is from mentors, also known as teachers. Because they have already been in your shoes as an up and coming musician, mentors are extremely beneficial for building your arsenal of game. You can check out a friend here named Jonathan Wright, who actually has another blog post detailing steps necessary to be a successful composer for production libraries.
Stock music Genres to Create
Like we discussed before, stock music is typically an easy endeavor to make and only requires the average person to have a DAW or Digital Audio Workstation. As for what genres you will be creating certain websites have their top lists of music categories that sell the most. On a certain websites such as Productiontrax.com the top selling genres are usually Niche related such as Inspirational and Corporate...
That makes a LOT of sense, since we're in the era of social media companies have to adapt to the ever-changing competition guided with millennial taste of course (; (Happy, upbeat tracks tend to dominate the best-selling chart on Pond5) It shouldn't be any surprise that happier soundtracks do SO well considering that in basic psychology, humans tend to move further away from pain instead of pleasure. If you could take ONE thing from this blog, understand that fear of loss is a POWERFUL convincing motivator for turning tunes into income!
